Russian Dragoons at Borodino

Some more of my troopers for the Borodino game next month.  These are Perry miniatures, and I'm not keen on them.  I wish I'd bought more Front Rank guys. I like the nice, chunky proportions of the FR minis.  They remind me of old school Citadel minis and are fun to work on.

I love the stuff the Perrys did for GW way back when, but these Napoleonics lack a certain something.  I'm also not a bit happy with my painting on these.  I'm new to Napoleonics and kind of struggling with it.  To make matters worse, I'm having to paint these in something of a  hurry, as the Guard has dropped a school on me from out of the blue, which is going to trim away 3 weeks of time I could have spent getting these guys to where I'd like them to be.  I've still got to do 6 Hussars, and it's going to be a very rushed job.  Not happy about that.

On a sad note, it looks like these are the last pictures my trusty little Pentax Optio will ever take for TFTBB.  After some 10 years of gallant service in war and peace it seems he has finally given up the ghost.  He quit right after I took these. He could always be trusted to make my minis look nice. I'll have to try to learn to use my wife's camera until I can replace my old buddy.  Farewell, comrade.

Again, not happy with these, but they'll do for a weekend of wargaming, I guess. Can't spare any more time to work on them.  On to the Hussars...

  1. I hope you give the camera a good send off...Viking funeral perhaps? I know what you mean about the Perry figures. Superbly anatomically correct, but lacking something..... perhaps they are not toy like enough. I prefer slightly wonky figures like Lancashire Games or Old Glory.

    1. Hmm...I'm too deep in mourning to know what to do with his remains just yet. I'll figure it out eventually. About the Perrys...yes, I don't know what it is, but I really hated painting them, and it shows. They just weren't any fun to work on. It's not often that I run into that. If I do any more Naps in future, I might go with Old Glory, like you say. They are goofy looking, as a rule, but for some reason painting them is always enjoyable, and they always look good on the table.

  2. I have to say that I think they are rather splendid; Dragoons at full tilt, what could be better?

    1. Thanks for your support, Michael. That buoys my morale a bit.

  3. They look nice... but I agree the Front Ranks Napoleonics are the bee's knees!

  4. Hey Mouse,

I add my vote too for Front Rank. Love them! For the last while I have been buying and painting up Front Rank 40mm AWI guys to go with a collection of already painted figures that I was lucky to acquire. But Essex Naps are also really great. Nice and chunky with a great heft when mounted in fours!

Sad to hear about your camera friend. But one of the perks of being married is the use of the wife's things! I have been using my darling wife's camera now for the past six years and happily see no need to get another one.

    1. Yeah, not using these minis next time. It's not just the minis' fault, though. My painting also sucks. I just need to get a feel for the genre. Thanks for your commiserations on Mr. Camera. I found one of his twin siblings on ebay very cheap, however, so things turned out ok.
