Dead Men Space Marines Assault Squad

A new squad for my Rogue Trader Space Marine fore, which is getting pretty close to being finished now.  11 mighty champions of the Emperor, ready to dive upon the unrighteous with wailing chainswords and buzzing power axes.  Heretics, beware!
The Squad Leader, Big Sarge and some friends...
Oh my God!  Big Sarge, what happened to your face?!  One eye appears to be way lower than the other, or have I just mis-read this?  The sculptor dropped the ball here on what is otherwise a terrific mini.  Maybe it's supposed to be a mass of scar tissue around his right eye?  Or maybe he's a mutant...?
Plasma pistol conversion.  I couldn't find an assault marine with plasma pistol figure but Army list says you're supposed to have one in your assault squad so I converted this one.
Bloody big eighties hair!!  Motorhead hair!  Brian Ansell and Andy Chambers circa 1987 prepare their assault!
Andy attacks!
Chainsword brothers prepare to bound skyward!
"Die, Heretic!"
I still want one more tactical squad, a devastator squad, some scouts and a Thudd gun, and I have two Land Speeders at home waiting for me to put them together and paint them, but that should be about it for the Dead Men Space Marines. Dang, I want to get home!

Dead Men Space Marines Officers & Another Librarian

Dead Men Space Marine Officers  huddle during a brief lull in the fighting in Operation Kundunn IV.  After Imperial Guard and Planetary Defense Forces Repeatedly failed to quash tribal resistance in the Notorious Kundunn region of Geminion Secundus, Three Companies of Dead Men and supporting elements were dispatched to clear the way for a new offensive.  Kundunn IV broke the back of tribal resistance in three weeks, though mop up operations continued for years afterwards.

Two views of a Dead Men Space Marine Rhino halted in the middle of a Kundunni town.

Marine Commanders frequently rely on the speed and protection of the Rhino's armored hide to carry them across the battlefield.  The camo paint scheme applied here over the more usual scab red neatly blends with the rocky mountain and scrub-forest terrain of much of Geminion Secundus.
A Captain, a veteran of the Chapter's First Company Judging by his Terminator Honors, punctuates his orders with a flourishing of his awesome Power Fist.  Traitors, Beware!
Another attendant at this leaders' meeting, a librarian judging by his tabard and force sword, demonstrates his enthusiasm for the fight...
A Lieutenant prepares to wade into battle with power sword and purity seals...
Fascinating shot of another, remarkably well equipped lieutenant wearing what appears to be a modified suit of mark VII armor.  Mark VII armor was unusual amoung the Dead Men during this period, the chapter being reliant for the most part on the older Mark VI 'Corvus' suit. Also unusually, he carries a bolter rigged with a silencer.  His left shoulder pad is perhaps most interesting of all:  Such armor appears in no other data faxes available to this author.  It may be a version of the Pactum Corvi, that rarest of awards said to be given out to members of the Raven Watch Chapter who distinguished themselves by repeated acts of insane valor and devotion.  If so, it is evidence of the survival of certain customs and practices of the original chapters through the consolidation of The Death Eaters, The Harvesters and The Raven Watch into the Dead Men Space Marines Chapter...
The last few months have been devoured by furious preparations for leave taking, and mighty little time has been left over for hobby stuff.  A brief lull in the frenzy has come as friends and I wait for the Thunderhawk to show up and whisk us away for an extended stay on strange new worlds.  I wanted to get these lads done before I left home.  They weren't quite finished but this was as near to complete as I could get them in time.  Snapped these pictures in great haste, virtually on my way out the door, and they've been sitting on my laptop for over a month waiting for me to get a chance to post them.

I'm pretty optimistic about having a decent amount of time to paint and goof off whilst I'm there.  Hopefully friends and family will soon be able to mail off the several boxes of based and primed minis I prepared to get me through the trip!  I've also discovered a few lapsed game nerds amoung my traveling companions so there may even be opportunities for a few skirmishes here and there!

Rogue Trader: Dead Men Space Marines Terminator Squad

From a manuscript discovered in the depths of the scriptorium, The Emperor's Palace, Terra

To: His Excellency, The high Inquisitor Josephes T'Resque
From: Yacobe Scrivenius

Excellency,
In certain appendices to the Liber Haeresium, one finds what appears to be a partial catalog of those units and fragments of units which were disbanded and reformed as Battle Group Omega. Personnel and equipment strengths (where known) are also listed. The designations of long lost regiments and the descriptions of their pitiful condition at the time of their annexation to the Battle Group provide a vivid impression of  desperate nature of the fighting in those darkest days of The Horus Heresy...names and faces lost in the dust of ten thousand years.

A fragment of this roster appears below:

240 Cavalrymen of the 60th Montanya Rough Riders, dismounted, their mounts having all perished in the 'siege of Callyx VII' fighting as infantry
77 miscellaneous personnel, all that remained of the 224th Cassiopeia
2,000 guardsmen without officers or NCOs, raw recruits hurried through the Imperial Guard Infantry school on Cillia VI and shipped to the Battle Group just before the school was overrun
640 gunners of 97th Jennovan Artillery, their guns lost on Storr Valln IV, fighting as infantry
1,900+ men of 'Van Dern's Legion' (?)
Some 76,800 men of Planetary Defense Forces and several Imperial Guard Regiments all hailing from the Valia system, led by their Supreme Leader Luppolde Voldredd, a name we shall see again in this dossier
12,462 men of the Jennovan Planetary Defense Forces, evacuated in the final hours before their planet was destroyed.
706 men of the 21226th Penal Battalion. To this unit the scribe attached the Imperial designator "X", meaning that it's personnel should be considered expendable.
1,600 or so convicted thieves, heretics and perverts of the 'Mundt Penal Legion', led by one Major J. Wankeldirkler, late of the Mundt Planetary Defense Forces.  This unit and its commander were branded with Imperial Designator 'XX' meaning that they were not only expendable, but that their rapid expenditure was actually considered highly desirable by the Administratum.
89 staff officers and support personnel, all that remained of the 160th Harkanni
1,881 training cadre and cadets of the Imperial Guard Armor Officer's Candidate School on Hrassk, evacuated before the school was overrun. These troops are listed as having 62 serviceable tanks, mostly obsolescent training vehicles salvaged from the loss of the school.
28 officers and men of the 616th Suprema, all that remained of their regiment.
415 naval Personnel, survivors from the loss of the ships Angelique and Pallita, fighting as infantry.
19 men of the 14th Soledad, all that remained of their regiment.
56 men of the 77th Permskaya, all that remained of their regiment...

The list goes on.

At the top of the list are the three Marine Chapters who, their planets overrun, their fortress monasteries destroyed, their geneseed stocks lost, formed the core of the Battle Group:  144 Marines of The Harvesters, 180 Marines of The Raven Watch, 204 Marines of The Death Eaters, all essentially written off as losses by the Administratum, even before they were killed.

According to the Liber Haeresium,  when Grand Master Coresh of The Harvesters assumed command of Battle Group Omega, he was given a month to organize, train and prepare it for battle.  This training period must have been cut short, for, as the appendices tell us, scarcely two weeks later elements of the Battle Group were already in action against traitor forces in the Ulmm and Klaster systems.  The Ulmm and Klaster fighting was savage and losses were heavy.  Incidentally, Grand Master Koresh seems to have wasted no time 'expending' the personnel of the 'Mundt Penal Legion'.  The Legion is reported as having been wiped out in the fighting on Saxe-Ulmm.

In the weeks and months that followed, Battle Group Omega was hurled from one sector to another in a series of desperate and costly holding actions linked by dangerous and disorienting warp jumps. What is sometimes referred to as 'battle fatigue' must have begun to set in, even amoung the Marines, for after a time, a curious and perhaps heretical cult began to take shape which suggests an attempt by some of the Marines' spiritual leaders to come to grips with an epidemic of extreme combat stress.  The cult is generally held to have begun with the radical theories of the Librarian Henc Morgunn and the pre-battle sermons of Chaplain Willym Pil Grimm.  Both seemed to hint at the idea that it was possible for men to project themselves forward through time, from the pre-mission present, through the horrors of combat, to a peaceful place beyond.   Put another way, Pil Grimm and Morgunn seem to have been suggesting that the events or moments of a man's life occur simultaneously rather than sequentially, that a man's future is already his present, and his present already his past.
Although I believe this summary of the ideas of the great Librarian and Chaplain to be simplistic at best, crude and stupid at worst, we can begin to understand their motive in formulating such beleifs.  I consider the bland history of my own peaceful life.  Here in the dark I have pored over hundreds of pages blanketed with accounts of the struggles of the Omega men.  Battles often fought with the courage of despair against impossible odds.  The storming of the battlements of Rah.  The long retreat over the sands beneath the blazing triple suns of Storic IV, the doomed stand at the Haolean Gate. I try to imagine myself as a soldier in that time and place, amoung that company of the condemned. Could unbounded faith in the Emperor have always been enough to overwhelm such fear and disorientation?
Under the stress of preparation for battles in which the Omega men knew they would be at severe disadvantage and must sustain cruel losses, the thought that the mission was already over, and that a man was already safely back in his bunk aboard ship, or consigned to the peace of the grave, may have been a great comfort. The extreme conditions under which the Omega men were forced to fight, whipped back and forth through the terrors of the warp from one traumatic fight to the next, must have had a disorienting effect which could have made Morgunn and Pilgrimms' radical theories on the nature of time seem all the more plausible.
I make no claim to being an authority on the Spiritual beliefs of The Dead Men.  In attempting to gain some insight into the foundations and the workings of their cult, I have had to infer much and guess more, for only merest fragments of the writings of Morgunn and Pilgrimm are to be found anywhere on Terra. However, His Excellency will undoubtedly be interested to learn that there are references to at least one carefully preserved and annotated volume of their collected works kept under lock and key at the Marines' monastery on Ran.  Until such a time as this work can be accessed, much about these Dead Men must remain a mystery.
Some things are clear, however.  Amoung the personnel of Battle Group Omega, it was the men of the Terminator Companies who most readily embraced the cult of Morgunn and Pilgrimm.  Datafaxes from this period of the heresy show Terminator suits and vehicles emblazoned with slogans such as 'Time Enough', 'Tick Tock' and 'Dead Already'.  Its hardly surprising that the Terminators were the first and most enthusiastic supporters of Morgunn and Pil Grimm, for it was the Terminators who bore the added strain of having to teleport again and again into the most hardest and most desperate fighting on any given battlefield.  As the elite of their chapters, they were the best able to endure it, but there is no denying that it was amoung the Terminator companies that the ideas of Morgunn and Pil Grimm first took root and began to grow.  I have included a few datafaxes here showing Terminators of the Dead Men at a much later date, during the sixteenth scouring of the Death World Proteous, t the height of the Second, or Great, Genestealer war.
I am compiling some notes on the early history of the Chapter, post heresy, for you next, and in addition a more general history of The Wailing Reach.  I do hope that they may eventually find you, and that my efforts here bear some fruit.
...

All my food and water is gone now.  It is only the work that sustains me.  I am mildly surprised that I have not perished already. Perhaps I have gained some lean strength from the study of these 'Dead Men'.  When I first took up this task, I was inclined to frown on them and their strange, seemingly heretical ideas.  Now, knowing so much more of their story, I find I admire them.  Even for men such as ourselves, who have given up all our years in service to The Emperor,  it is too easy to forget that our own sorrows are of small account compared to the burdens that were born up by heroes of old.  I still have much to do before I die, but I must lie down now, for just a bit.  As I do so, I shall imagine that this dossier has somehow already found its way into your hands, and that my flesh is already but dust upon this floor.
"Traitors!  Heretics! You are already dead!"

Rogue Trader: Dead Men Space Marines Tactical Squad #2

From a manuscript discovered in the depths of the Scriptorum, The Emperor's Palace, Terra.

To:  His Excellency, The High Inquisitor Josephes T'Resque
From: Yacobe Scrivenius

Excellency:

Please find here another set of data faxes showing images of 4th Company Marines of the Dead Men Space Marines Chapter.  These particular images were captured during the aftermath of the second 'Stealer war, and show a squad of marines clearing a ruined settlement on Geminion Secundus.
In the wake of the second, or 'Great' 'Stealer war, as it is sometimes known, a great deal of  'mopping up' was required, especially in the ancient ruins and abandoned settlements which the broken remnants of the Genestealer Cults and their despicable allies favoured as refuges.  Here our squad reassembles after having successfully reconnoitered  the ruined facility.  Follow-on forces can be seen moving in behind them.
During the initial advance a missile launcher armed marine and his battle brother over-watch their brethren.  Again we see here the stylized skull motif favoured by many Dead Men painted roughly on one marine's helmet.
Another view of the missile launcher armed marine.  The shoulder scroll bearing the motto 'Mort' clearly identifies him as a Marine of the fourth company.

Armed with a trusty plasma gun, a senior battle brother scans his sector, covering his brothers' advance...

A decorated battle brother, most likely a corporal/assistant squad leader...he has seen his share of action recently, as is evidenced by the traces of what appears to be melta-weapon damage to the lower rim of an improvised left shoulder plate and the bullet-hole near the bottom of his right greave.
Another data image featuring the plasma gunner and the 'corporal'.  Note the 'iron knuckles' worn on the corporal's left hand, held in an even greater readiness than the bolt gun, as if they are the Marine's preferred weapon.  It was men like this who won the Second 'Stealer war.
Interesting image of another battle brother advancing to his next position.  Note the bolt pistol held in readiness in addition to the bolt gun.
The Squad Leader.  Note that he wears no obvious recognized mark of rank, as seems to be so typical with the Dead Men.  Alone amoung his squad, however, he does wear a skull marking, barely discernible in this photo, above the 'Mort' scroll on his right shoulder.  Such devices often denote leaders amoung the Dead Men, although there seems to be no clearly defined ranking system.

The final photo in this sequence, showing the battle group reassembling in preparation for their follow-on mission.  Visible are two tactical squads, two chaplains, two librarians, a dreadnought, a robot and two tech marines.  Small but formidable groups like this were often primary maneuver elements in fighting the 'micro scale' combats of the Genestealer wars, where enemy forces were typically dispersed over wide areas and used rugged terrain or the local populations to secret themselves.  I am currently assembling more information on the historical background, customs and beliefs of the Dead Men  Space Marines for you, I would have included some of it here, but my electro-stylus is giving trouble, so I will include it with my next chapter, which will touch upon the Terminator squads of the Dead Men Chapter.

Rogue Trader: Dead Men Space Marines Librarians and Cataphract Robot

From a manuscript discovered in the depths of the Scriptorum, The Emperor's Palace, Terra.

To:  His Excellency, The High Inquisitor Josephes T'Resque
From: Yacobe Scrivenius

Excellency:

Beneath my hand, a door of steel.  How thick?  A foot?  Two?  On the other side, passages to the upper world...ramps, stairs that should bear me up once more into the world of undying light could I but reach them.  But the door is shut.  And there is no other exit from this, my tomb.   I am not yet dead, yet truly I am a dead man.  All that remains is for my food and water to expire, and then will come an end.

I am still deep in researching the history and customs of the Dead Men Space Marines Chapter for you.  Shown within this set of datafaxes are two Librarians of the chapter and a Cataphract battle robot.
Attached here, please find a datafax image of the great Librarian Henc Morgunn.  Morgunn seems to have been a pivotal figure from the days of Battle Group Omega, and his name is still spoken with awe and reverence by all Dead Men.  It is from the writings of Librarian Morgunn and the great Chaplain Willym Pil Grimm that many of the doctrines of the Dead Men were formulated.  Morgunn is chiefly remembered now for a last stand made on a bridge against a horde of Space Orks amid the ruins of the first colony on Geminion Prime.  The image of the Great Librarian making his lone stand on a narrow bridge against impossible odds in order to buy time to allow settlers to escape is often repeated in the art and iconography of the Chapter.

Another, unnamed Librarian who often appears in photographs and datafaxes with Henc Morgunn.  The skeletal hand on his left shoulder plate and the skull on his visor mark him as having likely been a Librarian of The Death Eaters Space Marines before that chapter was dissolved and its survivors integrated into the Dead Men.  Obsolescent chapter imagery and symbols continued into the formation of the Dead Men, and this Librarian's appearance is actually not at all atypical of Dead Men Librarians of the present day.
Robots were in widespread use in Battle Group Omega during the heresy and many robots remained in service with the Dead Men long afterwards.  Some were made honorary Battle Brothers.  This Cataphract robot, named "Digitus Mortis" has a history of service with the 4th company that passes well beyond living memory.

Rogue Trader: Dead Men Space Marines Chaplains and Dreadnought

From a manuscript discovered in the depths of the Scriptorum, the Emperor's Palace, Terra.

To:  His Excellency The High Inquisitor Josephes T'Rasque.
From: Yacobe Scrivenius

Excellency,

I have uncovered a little more information on that chapter of the Astartes known as the Dead Men, which I hope will be of interest to you.  Please find enclosed a selection of photo cells depicting Brother High Chaplain Willym Pil Grimm, another, un-named Chaplain and a Contemptor class dreadnought of that order operating in support of Marines of the Fourth Company against Voldraddi heretics on Geminion Prime.
My recent researches into the Dead Men Space Marines have uncovered a number of curious, possibly heretical customs practiced in the Chapter.  One is the fact that the High Chaplain is always named Willym Pil Grimm after the first Chaplain to be appointed as spiritual leader of the chapter, and of whom hundreds of legends and tales are told amoung the Dead Men.  Chaplains are also present  in greater numbers than amoung most chapters, are more prominent in battle, and suffer higher csualties than is common elsewhere.
My analysis of the Chapter's combat strength revealed the presence of an astonishing number of Dreadnoughts, of which the Contemptor Class suit shown here is a good example.  Dead Men often paint their Dreadnoughts in the likenesses of the fallen battle-brothers they house.  The prevalence of Dreadnoughts amoung the Dead Men might be attributed to some of their strange beliefs regarding the nature of time.

For even the most devout Marine, the idea of being entombed for centuries in a suit of Dreadnought armor may well give pause.  For the Dead Men, who seem to believe themselves already dead and buried, the claustrophobic prison of the suit holds few terrors.  Indeed, most references in Dead Men literature seem to exult in the idea of revenant Marines returning to rend and crush the enemies of his living brethren from his iron coffin.

I still have a little food and water left, and plenty of battery power.  I hope to be able to send you  a good deal more information on the Dead Men soon, as well as a detailed history of the wailing reach.
A tech Marne shepherds his charge into battle.
Willym Pil Grimm leads a detachment of Marines against traitor regiments on Geminion Prime.  The presence of the legendary Chaplain has been known to drive nearby Marines into a terrific killing frenzies....
