Fecadermis Ringwurmm's Clan Rat Regiment!

Scurrying triumphantly through the ruins of a human town come Clan Chieftain Fecadermis Ringwurmm's Clan Rats, eagerly seeking more filth and victims!  Yay!
Well to the fore (since there are no enemies in sight just now) is Fecadermis himself, armed with a cruel and grimy scimitar and what appears to be a cluster of poison wind globes.
Rat drummer.  This is my first Skaven Clan Rat regiment, but not the last, as these regular troops constitute the backbone of any Skaven horde...three more of these regiments will follow in the fullness of time...one more hand weapon and shield regiment and two spear and shield regiments...the largest will have thirty six models.
The standard bearer hoists aloft the ragged, crusty banner of his clan, all the while encouraging the more reticent amoung the hoist with an occasional flick of his whip...
The bulk of the troopers from this unit are derived from the ancient Warhammer Fantasy Regiments boxed set, first released in 1990 or 1991. Above is half of a two page advertisement which appeared in an issue of Dragon magazine that came out around that time.  Mightily impressed was I, yet a lanky teenager by the sight of those smart ranks of unlovely creatures...
Close up of one of the plastic Skaven painted by some youthful hand long ago...The detail on these, as you can see, is not great and I normally abhor plastic, but some of the figures from the Fantasy Regiments boxed set inspire such a sharp pang of nostalgia that I can give them a pass...

On the left are two of the plastic models, and on the right two metal ones which I used to fill out some gaps in the ranks.
Closer look at the plastics...they aren't that bad but...

...the metals are clearly the better pieces...to my eye anyway.

Grr...Fecadermis's warriors advance.....

"Forward!  Victory is ours!"

  1. Very squeaky. Nice work so far. I was always about sniffy about plastics, but these early monopose figures are a joy to paint, and cheap to buy, especially if pre painted by some crepuscular youth in gloss enamels, which can then be painted over.

    1. Thanks, Springinsfeld. Half of the twenty plastics in this unit were purchased with the big box in 1992 or thereabouts and have been rattling around in boxes ever since. The other half were about 80 percent finished by whomever I bought them from on Ebay, so they did paint up pretty quickly!

    1. The mono pose figs are a total blast from the past. I remember trying to figure out what to do with a box of 5 figs of almost every race. I was young and there was no interwebz...

    2. Did it matter that you had 5 each from 6 different races? You still had 30 guys!

    3. Well, cash flow was a problem. As was needing the rulebook and army book and not really understanding much about it. Definitely a bit young to have fully benefited to properly engage with wfb at the time (got into rogue trader via my older brother instead). Alas....

    4. I hear you. When you're young you have the time for miniatures but not the money. When you're old you have the money but not the time...

  3. Blimey Mr Mouse you've made a fine job of painting your larger brethren and I do like the name of the units leader Fecadermis is a name to savour slowly, saying it too fast and your tounge will get tied in knots.

    1. Thanks, Vagabond! I was very proud of myself, as I lay in bed reading with my wife, for thinking up the name Fecadermis. I tried to get her to see the of splendor of it, but she was markedly less enthusiastic about it for some reason. She doesn't always appreciate my brilliance.

  4. I love these sculpts and have a dozen or so scattered throughout my Skaven army. I found they take a wash quite well; the designer put in enough folds in the cloth etc. If I may give a piece of advice as a 3rd edition Skaven player; keep a block of 20 with hand weapons for the compulsory slaves unit and put the rest of your hand weapon armed troops into the spear men just to bulk out the units, In a clan rat unit With spears no one will notice a few with hand weapons and with initiative 4 the extra attacks from the second rank can make al the difference.
    Good luck
